Chin Tip Augmentation

Bringing a receding chin forward to suit your profile

When the chin tip is short and sits back, the line between chin and neck blurs. The face can look fuller than it is, and the mouth can look like it sticks out.

Chin tip augmentation brings the chin forward to balance the face and soften a heavy look. We choose a method to suit your chin, such as an implant or your own bone or fat.

Who it is for

  • Your lower jaw did not fully develop and sits back
  • From the side, the line from below your lip to your chin slopes backward
  • From the front, it feels as if you have no chin
  • The skin on your chin puckers when you close your mouth
  • Your mouth sticks out further than your chin

What is a short chin tip?

It means the chin is short from top to bottom and set back.

Because the lower jaw sits back, the line from chin to neck is unclear. The face can look fuller than it is, and the mouth can look like it sticks out.

Correcting a short chin tip can turn a heavy, unfriendly-looking face into a balanced, gentle one.

Chin surgery at KOKO Plastic Surgery

Drawing on many years of clinical experience and research, we perform chin surgery with a method that suits your face. We choose methods with safety in mind, not only the result.

There are several methods for different kinds of short chin, and other facial bone concerns can be treated at the same time.

Results vary with your bone structure and constitution.

Aftercare

To help the swelling settle quickly, please follow these points.

  • Swelling and bruising appear for about 2 days after surgery, then gradually fade over about 2 weeks.
  • For 3 days after surgery, cool the area often to limit swelling (repeat 15 minutes of cooling and 5 minutes of rest). From day 4, switch to warm packs to help the swelling go down faster.
  • Keeping your upper body raised, with the treated area above your heart, helps the swelling go down faster.
  • For 1 week after surgery, eat soft foods or liquids such as rice porridge or thin rice gruel, and avoid hard foods for 4 weeks.
  • If the surgery was done through the mouth, rinse your mouth about 4 times a day to keep the incision clean.
  • For 3 weeks after surgery, avoid alcohol and smoking, and rest without overdoing things.

Methods

An implant or your own tissue: the method that fits your chin

Placing an implant

Chin implants come in silicone, Gore-Tex and Medpor. Here is how the materials differ.

  • Gore-Tex

It tends to give a good shape, but after placement it can shrink by up to about 40%.

So we compress the Gore-Tex before placing it during surgery, which helps give a good result.

  • Medpor

It tends to give a good shape, but after surgery you may feel slight discomfort when moving your mouth.

Using your own tissue

  • Genioplasty (moving the chin bone)

Your chin bone is cut and moved forward or downward. Because the bone itself moves, the chin tends to look natural. It can also be expected to clean up the neckline and ease tension in the chin.

On the other hand, it needs general anesthesia and costs relatively more. If the bone is moved a long way, it can look like a double chin.

  • Micro fat transfer

Your own fat, taken from the lower abdomen or another area, is carefully grafted into the short chin over several sessions. It has drawn attention in recent years.

However, 1–2 additional grafts may be needed.

    Fat Transfer

Jaw bone surgery

  • Mandibular ramus osteotomy

This is done through an incision inside the mouth. There are two types: sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO).
