Short Nose Correction

The right length and angle for a short, upturned nose

When your nose is short and the tip turns up, your nostrils show more from the front. Some people are born this way. For others, repeated nose surgery has shortened the nose.

Short nose correction lengthens the nose into a clean line, guided by your facial proportions and the angles of your nose. Results vary from person to person.

Who it is for

  • Your nose is short and the tip turns up
  • Your nostrils show when seen from the front
  • Your nose has become shorter after several nose surgeries

What is a short nose?

In a short nose, the nose lacks length and the tip points upward. This is also called an upturned nose. Because the nostrils show from the front, some people worry that it looks like a “pig nose.”

Lengthening a short nose into a clean line is one of the more demanding procedures. The design has to consider not only length, but also the lines of your face and the angles of your nose.

The proportions we aim for

In short nose correction, we refine your nose while looking at the lines of your face and the angles of your nose. These are the ideal proportions we use as a guide:

  • Angle between the nose and upper lip: 90–100°
  • Angle between the forehead and the bridge: 115–130°
  • Length of the nose seen from the front: one-third of the length of the face

These figures are only a guide. The actual design is tailored to your features.

How the surgery is done

To lengthen the nose, we use a silicone or Gore-Tex implant. Depending on your nose, we may also use your own rib cartilage.

For the tip, we use ear or rib cartilage to create a natural shape. We decide which material suits you after examining your nose at your consultation.

Risks and side effects

Results and recovery vary from person to person. The main risks and side effects are:

  • Swelling and bruising after surgery
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Asymmetry, or a result that differs from what you pictured
  • An implant shifting, showing through or becoming exposed (when an implant is used)
  • Pain or a scar where rib cartilage was taken (when rib cartilage is used)
  • Contracture (tissue hardens and the nose shrinks)

If anything concerns you, you can still reach us on WhatsApp after you fly home.

Causes of a short nose

Born with a short nose, or shortened by surgery

In the diagrams, the pink line shows each nose shape and the dotted gray line shows the target line.

How the cause makes a difference

  • When you were born with a short nose

Genetic factors make the nose short from the start, with the tip turned up. The nostrils tend to show from the front.

  • When repeated surgery has shortened the nose

A nose can become shorter after several surgeries.

In this case, contracture, where tissue hardens and shrinks, is more likely. We check what was done in your previous surgeries before deciding on the technique.

FAQ

Common questions about Short Nose Correction

  • Yes. It is for people whose nose is short with an upturned tip, or whose nostrils show from the front.

  • Yes, you are a candidate. A nose shortened by repeated surgery is prone to contracture, which makes the surgery more demanding. When you message us on WhatsApp (+82 10-9608-0042), tell us when your previous surgery was and, as far as you know, which materials were used.

  • To lengthen the nose, we use a silicone or Gore-Tex implant, or your own rib cartilage depending on your nose. For the tip, we use ear or rib cartilage. Dr. Cho explains the materials at your consultation. We never use a material without explaining it to you and getting your consent.

  • Surgery takes about 1 hour under sedation, with no hospital stay. Stitches come out after 4–6 days, and recovery takes about 7 days. Plan to stay about a week.

  • It depends on your nose and the materials used. Send three photos of your face — front, side and 45° — on WhatsApp (+82 10-9608-0042), along with your surgical history. We will give you an estimate, and we can also go over it in an online consultation.

  • Nose surgery performed by Dr. Cho is covered by our Rhinoplasty Revision Policy. If a revision (touch-up surgery) is needed within 1 year of surgery, we perform one revision at no surgical fee. The sedation fee is charged separately.
