Facial contouring instructions
What to do before and after facial contouring surgery
Facial contouring surgery is done under general anesthesia. Here is how to prepare, and how to take care of yourself afterward. Even when surgery goes well, poor aftercare can change the shape. Aftercare matters as much as the surgery itself.
Before surgery
- 01
Surgery is done under general anesthesia, so do not eat for 8 hours beforehand. Do not drink water either.
- 02
Avoid anything that slows blood clotting. This includes aspirin, Tylenol, vitamin E (tocopherol), birth control pills, and alcohol such as wine or beer.
- 03
If you take medication for high blood pressure or diabetes, be sure to tell us beforehand.
- 04
Until surgery, stop any medication we have not approved, including herbal medicines and health supplements.
- 05
Avoiding alcohol and smoking for 1 week before surgery helps you recover faster.
- 06
We recommend not scheduling surgery on the first day of your period.
- 07
Take a quick shower before you come to the clinic.
- 08
Please remove your contact lenses before you come.
- 09
Please remove nail polish and gel nails from your fingers and toes.
- 10
Wear comfortable clothes. Sunglasses, a scarf or a hat are handy for the trip back.
Right after surgery
For 3 days after surgery, apply cold packs often to keep swelling down. Repeat 15 minutes of cooling and a 5-minute break. From day 4, we recommend warm packs to help the swelling go down faster.
Avoid the surgical area. Wipe with a towel dampened with soapy water, then wipe clean with a fresh wet towel. Once the tape comes off, you can gradually go back to washing your face normally.
Rinsing disinfects the wound inside your upper lip. Rinse gently, about 4 times a day.
After surgery
- 01
Post-op care is available weekdays 11:00–18:00 and Saturdays 11:00–15:00. Patients are seen in order of arrival, so you may have to wait.
- 02
Keep your upper body raised and the surgical area above your heart. This helps swelling go down faster.
- 03
For 1 week after surgery, eat soft or liquid foods such as rice porridge, thin rice gruel and juice. Avoid hard foods for 4 weeks.
- 04
If surgery was done through the mouth, you may bleed inside your mouth. If blood runs down your throat or seems heavy, be sure to contact the clinic.
- 05
You can usually brush your teeth from the day after surgery. It depends on the wounds inside your mouth, so follow our instructions.
- 06
For 3 weeks after surgery, avoid alcohol and smoking. Take it easy and let your body rest.
- 07
To prevent infection, be sure to take the medication we prescribe.
Even when surgery goes well, poor aftercare can cause problems or change the shape. Aftercare matters as much as the surgery itself.
