What is Epicanthoplasty?

Epicanthoplasty is a procedure to make the eyes appear larger by opening the corners of the eyes.

– Surgery Duration: 30 minutes
– Anesthesia: Local anesthesia
– Hospitalization: Not required
– Stitch Removal: 4-6 days

What is medial canthoplasty?

The magic medial and lateral canthoplasty, also known as Mongolian fold correction surgery, targets the skin folds covering the inner corners of the eyes, known as the Mongolian fold. Approximately 60% of Koreans are born with Mongolian folds.

These folds can give the impression of smaller, heavier-looking eyes by covering the actual inner corners of the eyes and making the distance between the eyes seem wider.

Therefore, medial canthoplasty involves removing the folds present on the inner corners of the eyes to expose a few millimeters of the hidden inner part of the eyes, creating a clearer and larger appearance from the inside of the eyes. This surgery is recommended for individuals with eyes that appear distant from each other or small. When performed in conjunction with double eyelid surgery, it can result in longer-looking eyes and improve the width between the eyebrows, enhancing the overall attractiveness of the eyes.

Candidates of medial canthoplasty surgery

1. People with widely spaced eyebrows
2. Eyes with a prominent upper eyelid
3. Small, tired-looking eyes

Advantages and disadvantages of medial canthoplasty

Advantages

1. It elongates the length of small eyes with a wide intercanthal distance, giving them a sleeker appearance.
2. If the eyes appear tight, it adjusts the direction of the eyes to a horizontal orientation for a softer impression.
3. Surgical scars are concealed beneath the lower eyelash line, making them hardly visible and causing minimal disturbance to daily life.
4. Swelling is minimal post-surgery, and stitches are removed around the 4th or 5th day.

Disadvantages

If the surgery is performed extensively, there is a possibility of residual scarring depending on the individual post-surgery.

What is canthoplasty?

Outer canthoplasty is a surgery that corrects the outer canthus, extending the width of the eye horizontally. This procedure involves incising the mucous membrane on the outer part of the eye, allowing for the extension of the eye’s width without concerns about visible scarring. Typically, an extension of about 2-3mm is performed, which yields significant results. While this procedure may not have a significant effect if the eyes are deeply set, combining it with double eyelid surgery can provide even more refined results.

What is Magic Canthoplasty?

It is a surgery that not only involves cutting the outer corners of the eyes but also lowering both the inner and outer corners to maximize the effect of outer canthoplasty, making the eyes appear even larger.

Pros and cons of outer corner eye surgery

Pros

  1. It prevents re-adhesion.
  2. The overall size of the eyes increases by 1-2mm or more.
  3. It improves the feeling of being narrow on the inner side.
  4. The length of the eyes is extended on both sides, resulting in a clearer appearance.
  5. When combined with double eyelid and inner corner eye surgery, there is significant improvement in eye shape.
  6. It can slightly lower droopy eyelids, improving the overall impression.

Cons

Compared to inner corner eye surgery, there is less change in the size of the eyes, and depending on the surgical method involving skin incision, there may be slight surgical scars, so delicate surgical skills of the specialist are required during the procedure.
