Double Eyelid Surgery at KOKO: Enhance Your Natural Beauty

Welcome to KOKO Plastic Surgery, the first cosmetic surgery clinic specializing in nasal procedures in Apgujeong. I am Dr. Jo Bae-jung, and with 22 years of surgical experience, I am dedicated to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals. Today, I will delve into the details of Double Eyelid Surgery.

What is Double Eyelid Surgery?

Double eyelid surgery is a procedure designed to create a natural-looking double eyelid crease that harmonizes with your individual eye shape. Our approach considers multiple factors, including the position of the eyebrows, the thickness and shape of the eyelids, as well as the anatomical structure surrounding the eyes and the muscles involved in opening them. This personalized approach ensures that the crease is tailored to achieve your desired outcome.

Techniques for Double Eyelid Surgery

Buried Suture Method

Also known as the ‘double-fold surgery’ or ‘non-incision method’, this technique involves creating a double eyelid by passing sutures through small needle holes without making a skin incision. The process includes creating 3-4 tiny holes, threading sutures through them, and tying knots to attach the muscle and skin to the conjunctiva.

Ideal Candidates for the Buried Suture Method 👁️🔍

  • No excess fat with thin and elastic eyelids 🚫🪄
  • No sagging of the eyelid skin 🚫👇
  • Faintly visible original double eyelid line 👁️🔳
  • Desire for a thin inner double eyelid ✨🪞

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Buried Suture Technique

Advantages:

  • Minimal swelling and no visible scarring due to the absence of skin incisions.
  • Simple procedure, typically lasting 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Natural-looking double eyelid without visible surgical scars.
  • Easy to make partial revisions if needed.
  • Quick recovery; face washing and makeup application can resume around the 3rd to 4th day post-surgery.

Disadvantages:

  • Does not address issues like double eyelid loss, sagging skin, or excess fat.
  • Risk of skin sagging, potentially leading to a narrower eyelid width.
  • Possible visibility or palpability of knots in thin-skinned patients.
  • Less effective for those with excessive fat, muscle, or sagging skin.

Incisional Method

Partial Incision Method: This method combines the benefits of both incision and buried suture techniques, creating a more natural and refreshed appearance. It involves minimal incisions to address severe eyelid sagging or significant scarring, ensuring better adhesion and minimizing the risk of the double eyelid becoming undone.

Full Incision Method: The traditional approach that involves skin incisions to remove sagging eyelids, muscles, and fat layers. Ideal for those with significant sagging or excess fat, or for those needing correction for ptosis. The surgery typically takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, with stitches removed on the 4th to 5th day. Swelling usually subsides by about 70% within 1-2 weeks, with complete resolution occurring over 2-3 months.

Candidates for the Incision Method:

  • Sagging skin and excess eyelid skin.
  • Thick skin with substantial fat and muscle layers.
  • Need for simultaneous removal of excess skin and fat.
  • Eyelid ptosis resulting in a sleepy appearance.
  • Revision surgery for high double eyelid lines or scar removal.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Incision Method

Advantages:

  • Suitable for eyes with excess fat and thick layers.
  • Effective for removing sagging skin and creating a clear double eyelid.
  • Applicable to all eye types.

Disadvantages:

  • Longer recovery time with more swelling compared to non-incisional methods.
  • Surgical scars may remain, though they are generally less conspicuous.
  • The procedure takes about an hour under local anesthesia.
