What is short chin surgery?

A short chin refers to a condition where the chin appears short due to a decrease in chin growth, causing it to retract inward. When the chin is recessed or lacks sufficient length, the face may appear asymmetrical. Consequently, it gives the impression of a protruding mouth and a stubborn, dull look. Correction for this condition can be achieved through procedures such as chin augmentation with implants, chin advancement surgery, or autologous fat grafting surgery.

Surgical methods for short chin

Insertion of implant

If the symptoms of a short chin are not severe, inserting implant into the chin and adjusting its size or position is a method used.

Surgical Procedure

1. Make a 2-3 cm incision in the mucosa of the chin.
2. Lift the periosteum to create the position for the implant, then insert and secure the implant.
3. Suture the incision site.

Fat transfer

It is a method of harvesting fat from areas such as the thighs and abdomen, then transplanting it in layers onto the short chin.

Surgical Procedure

1. After harvesting unwanted fat from areas such as the thighs and abdomen, pure fat is extracted.
2. Fat is then transplanted via injection directly into the chin without the need for incisions.

Hyaluronic acid

Surgical Procedure

This method is used when there’s no time to wait for downtime or when one fears surgery and prefers a quick procedure. Hyaluronic acid is injected into the area of the short chin to contour the jawline. In cases of strong jaw muscles, simultaneous treatment with Botox on the jawline may also be necessary.

Mandibular advancement surgery

Genioplasty involves cutting the bone of the chin and moving it forward. This surgical method allows for adjustment of the chin’s length depending on the angle of the cut, resulting in a natural chin shape.

1. An incision of 2-3cm is made at the chin.
2. After lifting the periosteum to expose the chin, the planned osteotomy line is followed for cutting the bone.
3. After the osteotomy, the cut portion of the bone is advanced forward.
4. The advanced bone is fixed, and the incision site is sutured.

Differences between Chin Implants and Osteotomy

“Implants result in minimal changes to the chin line, whereas osteotomy leads to significant changes.”

Postoperative Care Instructions

  1. After surgery, continuing to use ice packs until the swelling subsides can be beneficial.
  2. After surgery, fasting for a day is required, followed by a soft diet (liquid foods such as porridge, juice, milk, etc.) for 7 days.
  3. From two weeks after surgery, almost normal eating is possible, but it’s advisable to cut food into small pieces, and it’s better to avoid hard foods until after 4 weeks.
  4. For about 3-4 days after surgery, wearing a compression bandage on the face while sleeping, avoiding positions where the head is lowered or lying face down, and using 2-3 soft pillows for support can help alleviate discomfort.
  5. After surgery, it’s important to rinse your mouth after meals to prevent inflammation and infection.
  6. Avoiding alcohol and smoking after surgery is necessary as they can delay wound healing. If unavoidable, alcohol and smoking can be resumed after 3-4 weeks.
  7. During the downtime after surgery, be cautious of strong impacts.
