Misconceptions and Truth About Gore-Tex: Pros and Cons of Rhinoplasty Materials

KOKO Plastic Surgery,

procedures in Apgujeong, has opened its doors.
With 23 years of surgical experience and expertise,
I am Dr. Jo Bae-jung from KOKO Plastic Surgery.

Hello! Today, I would like to discuss the misconceptions and
truths about Gore-Tex, one of the materials used in rhinoplasty.
Since the choice of material greatly affects the outcome of rhinoplasty,
it’s important to understand the characteristics of each material.

Role and Characteristics of Gore-Tex

Raising the nasal bridge and maintaining the nasal tip are very important aspects of rhinoplasty.
When the nasal bridge is weak, the tip of the nose droops, causing the overall shape of the nose to lose balance.
Gore-Tex, which is used in these cases, has several unique characteristics.

Advantages of Gore-Tex

1.Gapless Structure: Gore-Tex completely wraps around the gaps in the bone.
Bones can have sharp parts, but Gore-Tex covers all these areas, creating a natural connection.

2.No Boundary Lines: Because there are no gaps, there are no visible boundary
lines between the implant and the bone. This provides a more natural appearance.

3.Low Infection Rate: Thanks to its gapless structure, there is no space for bacteria to enter and colonize,
resulting in a relatively lower risk of infection. This helps reduce the possibility of post-surgical complications.

All Materials Have Pros and Cons

While Gore-Tex has many advantages, like all medical materials, it also has disadvantages.
Silicon also has its own pros and cons. Therefore, it’s impossible to say that one material is unconditionally better than others.

The most important factor in choosing rhinoplasty materials is
selecting the appropriate material that suits each patient’s nasal structure,
desired results, and medical condition.
Choosing the most suitable material through thorough consultation with a specialist is the shortcut to achieving good results.

Materials such as Gore-Tex and silicon each have unique characteristics,
and the best results can be achieved when these characteristics match the patient’s situation.
Therefore, material selection should always be made through proper diagnosis and consultation with a specialist.
